The original over-large O-ring worked semi-adequately when it was new -- it leaked enough to make the 3900 sluggish compared to other models, but not enough that it failed to clean the pool. If you don't have the tail on the weight rings will rub against the walls and rapidly wear. New weight rings are round. After a year or two you will see the weight rings become flat from wear.
