WebMay 25, 2015 · It's noticeable between 30-40 mph and when you are decelerating. If you give it gas it's very faint but off the gas is when you really hear it. Highway speed, nothing. Just 30-40 and then under 30 its quiet. I took it to a BMW shop and they said it's definitely coming from the rear differential. They suggested replacing a bearing but cant ... It sounds like it is coming from the driver front, but a couple of people that have looked at it says it’s coming from the rear. If I use the brakes it stops and only does it at 20-30mph!

WebNov 18, 2016 · What you could be hearing is the chain in the transfer case. If the chain has too much play, then the chain will rub on the transfer case housing when not under a load. Try going up a steep hill. If the noise is present under load, then the chain is stretched. I recommend replacing the chain in the transfer case if its rubbing the housing.
